NAIFC: Lake Antioch, IL

The 4th open qualifier for the North American Ice Fishing Circuit (NAIFC) was just completed within 60 miles of the heart of downtown Chicago.  Tournament headquarters was at the Thirsty Turtle on Channel Lake in Antioch, IL.  The proximity to a large metro area attracted just under 100 competitors primarily from IL but, teams from IN, MI and WI were also present.

Teams arrived several days in advance of the actual tournament date to become familiar with the lake and try to locate where fish are holding.  However, the biggest challenge proved to be changing weather conditions.  Daily high temperatures fluctuated from 34 degrees to 19 degrees and back up to 37 degrees.  Winds changed from coming out of south, then from the west and then out of the north with speeds varying from below 10 mph to almost 20 mph.  On competition Sunday, temperatures fell from 32 degrees to below zero.

Even with the changing weather and the effects that has on how well the “bite” will be, the majority of the teams brought their limit of 16 fish to the weigh in.  The top 3 teams were separated by just over a pound of their total fish weight.

As the seasons standings tighten with each passing qualifier, the NAIFC heads to its southern most stop on Pine Lake near LaPorte, IN before heading north again to Lake St. Helens in MI.  Quicksilver will be with them every step of the way.  Find out more at http://www.naifc.com/
