Fong as hot as Alabama
LEEDS, Alabama (June 10, 2016)
The sixth round of the MotoAmerica race series was held at Barber Motorsports Park in the deep south of Alabama this weekend, and wooo-wee, it was hotter than a three dollar pistol!
The heat wasn’t the biggest challenge. Small annoying gremlins had befallen the Quicksilver Latus Kawasaki Racing Team at Road America and the bikes just weren’t working at 100%. Well, not that having 4th and 5th place team finishes weren’t solid results — Funny how expectations change when one sits on the apex of the podium a few times this year — anyway, we digress. Back at Barber it looked as though those little monsters followed the team down south. On the starting grid of race 1, Fong was in the 4th row at the 12th position (7th in class) and David Anthony was at the 23rd and last position. Not a fun weekend for the team… or so it seemed.
Fong is a fighter. Little gremlins and seemingly sitting on the surface of the sun wasn’t going to knock him out of contention. Fong chipped away and chipped away at his deficit, passing his competitors cleanly and solidly to find himself with only one rider to pass. It was, yet again, beautiful and drama free riding by Fong. In race 1, Bobby came within less than a third a second behind Josh Herrin to take second. Equally as impressive was Race 2, where Bobby once again took second behind Herrin.
These strong finishes have now bumped Bobby to second place in the overall championship standings. Preliminary Superstock 1000 championship standings after Round 6:
- Josh Herrin, 218 pts
- Bobby Fong, 200 pts
- Claudio Corti, 198 pts
- Hayden Gillim, 146pts
- Danny Eslick, 133 pts
- Taylor Knapp, 111 pts
- Max Flinders, 78 pts
- David Anthony, 72 pts
